ROBERT KIPNISS

ABOUT ROBERT KIPNISS

Robert Kipniss is a well-known painter and printmaker, who has been creating art most of his life. His parents were artists and encouraged him to draw at an early age. Independent and stubborn he disliked receiving instruction on how to work. When his mother encouraged him to study at the Art Students League he would only sign up for a class with a model but no instructor. After graduating high school he went to study at Wittenberg College (now university) in Springfield , Ohio. While there he decided to study literature and become a poet. In 1950 he transferred to the University of Iowa to complete his degree in literature, but he also took a painting class.

In 1951 he entered a painting competition in New York City and was awarded his first one-artist show in a 57th Street gallery. In 1967 he made his first prints, which were drypoints. In 1968 he began making lithographs, creating over 400 images between 1968 and 1990. Since 1990 his printmaking has been almost exclusively in intaglio with the majority being mezzotints. Kipniss prints are in over 70 museums worldwide and numerous private collections, and since that first show in 1951 he has had more than 180 one-artist exhibitions. He has been elected to the National Academy in New York and The Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in London and an elected member of the Century Association.
