  • DESCRIPTION: The foot of Whitehall Street was the terminus for several ferry routes in the 19th century. The construction of the Brooklyn Bridge led to the demise of the East River lines, which ceased to exist by 1925. The Staten Island Ferry, begun in 1816, survives to this day.
